Borderline, the charity supported by the two Church of Scotland congregations in London, has been advised by the Scottish Government that, having slashed the 2009 grant of £107,000 to the charity to £24,500 in 2010, it has now decided that it will no longer provide any of the financial support necessary to enable the charity to provide the services needed to help homeless and insecurely housed Scots in London.

The Moderator of the General Assembly, the Right Reverend David Arnott, who visited Borderline on his St Andrewstide visit to Westminster in December last year, has written to the First Minister, Alex Salmond, expressing his disappointment at the withdrawal of funding and asking him to reconsider the decision. The Moderator has also written to all congregations of the Church of Scotland asking them to raise at least £100 each for Borderline.

Some members of the congregation may also have received individual letters from Alan Mackie, Chairman of Borderline, outlining the implications of the decision for our fellow Scots in London:

16 Scots will lose Borderline subsidised beds;

45 Scots won’t be resettled in accommodation across Scotland and London;

75 Scots will not have travel warrants to return home.

Alan is appealing for our immediate support to enable Borderline to continue the tradition of giving hope to those who have none, and remaining a stepping stone to a better life for our fellow Scots in London. There will be a retiring offering on behalf of Borderline after both services on quarterly communion Sunday, 4 March. However, regular donations from individuals would be very helpful in providing a regular income stream for Borderline.

There are leaflets in the church and the hall which give more information about this appeal, and you can also contact the charity on telephone 020 7240 3718; web site www.borderline-uk.org; email info@borderline-uk.org. If you would like to make a regular donation, write to:

The Saltire Club,

Borderline,

Ground Floor,

22 City Road,

London EC1Y 2AJ

for further information.

Our Minister and one of our elders, Geordie Fergusson, are Trustees of Borderline and the congregation has always responded very generously to retiring offerings for the charity. Please now give serious consideration to whether you are able to help on a more regular basis.
