Cyclists cross the USA

John Chestnut and Andrew Service on Jacksonville Beach
John, Andrew and the Atlantic Ocean

At 3.45pm on Friday 17 December – three days before their target date – John Chestnut and Andrew Service reached the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville Beach, completing their epic cycle trip across the US which began in Seattle on 27 September.

The two cousins covered 4,492 miles during 65 days on the road, a distance equivalent to 1.3 million pedal rotations.  They passed through 10 different states on the way, reached a height of 8,228 feet and travelled at a top speed of 43 mph.  Temperatures ranged from a wintry -6 degC to a sweltering 35 degC.

The trip originally aimed to raise £2,000 for Christian Aid and has raised £3,535 so far.  It’s still not too late to support the trip through the Just Giving website at and help the cousins to raise double their target.

Success - the Jacksonville city limit sign!

John is clearly delighted with the outcome.  ‘It’s great to have finished and I thank you all so much for your support over the last few months and even before with your encouragement leading up to the trip.’
